This Green Bean Casserole is a classic Thanksgiving side dish with a creamy sauce, tender green beans, and a crispy Parmesan herb topping. It’s a simple yet satisfying dish that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Green Bean Casserole:

  • 1 pound green beans, trimmed
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 ounces mushrooms (cremini, baby bella, or white), sliced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For the Parmesan Herb and Garlic Breadcrumbs:

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (or 1 teaspoon garlic flakes)
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Blanch green beans: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Blanch green beans in boiling salted water for 5-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Sauté mushrooms and onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté mushrooms until golden brown. Add onion and cook until softened. Stir in garlic.
  3. Make sauce: Add flour to the skillet and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and stir in heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Combine and bake: Add green beans to the sauce and stir to combine. Transfer to a casserole dish. In a separate bowl, combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and parsley. Sprinkle over the casserole. Bake for 20 minutes, then broil for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • You can use fresh or frozen green beans.
  • If you don’t have heavy cream, you can use half and half or milk.
  • For a richer flavor, use homemade chicken stock.
