Ingredients

Units Scale

Butter Onion Mixture

  • 12 tablespoons salted butter, softened and divided (1 1/4 sticks)
  • 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

Burger Patties

  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Final Assembly

  • 4 homemade burger buns, toasted
  • 4 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, water, and ยผ teaspoon of salt. Cover and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
  2. Finish Cooking the Onions: Reduce the heat to medium-low and remove the lid. Continue to cook until the onions are translucent and just beginning to brown, about 3 more minutes. Transfer the onions to a plate, divide into 4 equal portions, and set aside until ready to use.
  3. Prepare Burger Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal-sized portions and gently shape each into a 4ยฝxยฝ-inch patty. Sprinkle both sides of the patties with the remaining salt and pepper. Refrigerate the patties for 15-30 minutes.
  4. Butter the Buns: Spread each bun top with 2 tablespoons of softened butter. Set aside.
  5. Cook the Patties: Heat 1-2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet used for the onions over medium-high heat until it begins to smoke. Transfer the patties to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes without moving them.
  6. Finish Cooking the Patties: Flip the patties and cook for 1 more minute. Place 1 slice of cheese over each patty and continue to cook until the cheese is melted, about 20-30 seconds more.
  7. Assemble the Burgers: Transfer each patty to the bottom half of the buns. Add ยผ of the sautรฉed onions on top of each patty. Cover with the buttered bun tops and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use high-quality European-style butter for the richest flavor.
  • Lean ground beef is best for this recipe since extra fat is added with the butter.
  • Toast your buns for an extra crunch.
  • American cheese provides a mild and buttery flavor, but you can use any type of melting cheese.
  • Feel free to add your favorite burger toppings to customize the flavors.
  • For storage, keep the components in separate containers and assemble before eating. Burgers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days.
