Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Sloppy Joe Mixture

    • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
    • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
    • 1 green Bell Pepper, finely chopped
    • 1 lb Ground Beef
    • 1 cup Tomato Sauce
    • 1/2 cup Ketchup
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
    • 1 teaspoon Mustard
    • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
    • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Assembly

  • 8 slices Texas Toast
  • Shredded Cheese, for topping

Instructions

  1. Prep the Sloppy Joe Mixture: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and green bell pepper and sautรฉ until softened, about 3-5 minutes. Add the ground beef, cooking until browned and crumbly, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Make the Sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder into the beef mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Prepare the Texas Toast: While the mixture simmers, bake the Texas Toast according to the package instructions until golden and crispy.
  4. Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Once the toast is ready, press a well into each piece of bread with a spoon. Evenly spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture into each well. Top with shredded cheese and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • Store leftover Sloppy Joe mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
  • Reheat the mixture on the stovetop with a splash of water if needed. Reheat Texas Toast in the oven at 350ยฐF until warm and crispy.
  • To make ahead, prepare the mixture up to 2 days in advance and store in the fridge. Assemble and bake when ready to eat.
  • Use ground turkey, chicken, or a vegetarian meat substitute as alternatives to beef.
  • Peppers can be swapped with red, yellow, or orange bell pepper for a sweeter taste.
  • For added heat, incorporate chili powder or cayenne pepper into the beef mixture.
  • Mix some shredded cheese directly into the mixture for an extra cheesy result.
  • Drain excess beef fat to prevent the mixture from becoming greasy.
