Ingredients
Scale
Dinner Rolls Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon active-dry yeast
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary
- 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- optional: flaky sea salt, for serving
Garlic Herb Butter Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Heat the liquids: Stir together the water and melted butter in a saucepan, then add in the milk and honey and stir until combined. Heat the mixture over medium low heat, stirring occasionally, until it reaches 110°F. It will be warm but not hot to the touch. Alternatively, you can heat the mixture in a microwave until it reaches 110°F.
- Add yeast: Pour the liquid mixture into the large bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl if kneading by hand. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir quickly to combine, then let the yeast activate for 5 minutes until it is foamy.
- Mix in dry ingredients: Add in 3 1/2 cups of flour (reserve the rest for later if needed), rosemary, fine sea salt, and garlic powder. Using the dough hook on a stand mixer, beat on medium-low speed until combined. If the dough sticks to the bowl, add flour 1/4 cup at a time (up to 4 cups total) until the dough pulls away from the sides and is slightly sticky. Continue mixing on low speed for 4 to 5 minutes until smooth. If kneading by hand, stir flour into the wet ingredients until combined, then knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth.
- Let the dough rise: Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a damp towel or foil and let it rise in a warm spot for 15 minutes, allowing it to slightly puff.
- Prep oven and baking dish: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and set aside.
- Form the rolls: Punch down the risen dough gently. Divide the dough into 15 equal pieces, shaping each into a smooth ball. Arrange the dough balls in the greased baking dish. Cover with a damp towel or foil and let rise for another 15 to 20 minutes until slightly puffed.
- Bake: Remove the cover and bake the rolls for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and cooked through. Transfer the pan to a wire rack to cool slightly.
- Make the garlic butter: While the rolls bake, melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the sliced garlic and simmer gently for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and strain out the garlic slices. Stir in the chopped parsley until well combined.
- Serve warm: Brush the garlic herb butter generously over the hot rolls and sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy the fragrant, tender dinner rolls.
Notes
- To make the rolls by hand, complete steps 2 and 3 in a large bowl, then knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth.
- If using iodized table salt instead of fine sea salt, reduce the quantity to 1/2 teaspoon.
- If you prefer garlic butter with garlic pieces, finely mince the garlic instead of slicing. Alternatively, substitute fresh garlic with garlic powder in the butter.
