Description

This Patty Melt recipe is a classic diner favorite that’s easy to make at home! Juicy beef patties, melted Swiss cheese, and sweet caramelized onions are sandwiched between buttery slices of grilled sourdough bread. It’s a simple yet satisfying comfort food that’s perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices sourdough bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. Make Spread: Combine softened butter and mayonnaise in a small bowl until smooth.
  2. Form Patties: In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide into 4 portions and shape into thin patties. Sprinkle with remaining ½ teaspoon salt.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties in batches until no longer pink, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  4. Assemble Sandwiches: Spread one side of each bread slice with the butter-mayonnaise mixture. Layer half the bread slices with cheese, a patty, and caramelized onions. Top with remaining cheese and bread slices.
  5. Grill Sandwiches: Wipe out the skillet and return to medium-low heat. Cook sandwiches until golden brown and cheese is melted, 4-5 minutes per side.
  6. Serve: Cut each patty melt in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can use any type of cheese you like, but Swiss is classic for a patty melt.
  • If you don’t have caramelized onions, you can use thinly sliced raw onions, but they won’t be as sweet and flavorful.
  • For a variation, try adding a fried egg to each sandwich.
