Description
This festive Jack-o’-Lantern Cake is a delightful Halloween centerpiece made with spice cake, orange-tinted vanilla frosting, and charming fondant and Oreo cookie decorations to create a pumpkin with a playful jack-o’-lantern face.
Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 2 packages regular size spice cake mix
Frosting
- 3 cans (16 ounces each) vanilla frosting
- 2 to 3 teaspoons orange paste food coloring
Decoration
- 1 ice cream cake cone (about 3 inches tall)
- 2 Oreo cookies
- 1 package (24 ounces) ready-to-use rolled black fondant
Instructions
- Prepare and Bake Cakes: Follow the package instructions to prepare and bake the spice cakes using two 10-inch fluted tube pans. Once baked, invert the cakes onto wire racks and allow them to cool completely.
- Tint Frosting: While the cakes cool, mix 2 to 3 teaspoons of orange paste food coloring into the vanilla frosting until evenly colored a vibrant orange.
- Shape Pumpkin: Cut a thin slice off the bottom of each cooled cake to level them. Spread frosting on one cake bottom and press the flat sides of the two cake layers together to form a pumpkin shape. Place a foil ball in the center of the cake to support the stem.
- Frost Cake: Use the remaining orange frosting to frost the entire cake smoothly, covering it completely for the pumpkin effect.
- Add Stem: Place the ice cream cake cone on top of the frosted cake to represent the pumpkin stem.
- Decorate Face: Roll out a small piece of black fondant to 1/8-inch thickness and cut out shapes for the jack-o’-lantern’s mouth and nose. Reserve any leftover fondant for future use. Remove the tops from the Oreo cookies, then cut half-circles out of the filling to create the eyes. Press the fondant pieces and Oreo cookie eyes gently into the frosting to complete the pumpkin face.
Notes
- Using a foil ball inside the cake helps support the ice cream cone stem, preventing it from toppling over.
- The orange food coloring allows you to customize the frosting shade to your preference.
- Leftover fondant can be stored wrapped tightly and used for other decorations later.
- Make sure cakes are completely cooled before frosting to ensure smooth application and avoid melting.
- Oreo eyes add a fun, edible touch and make the cake more whimsical for Halloween parties.
