Description

This Homemade Hamburger Helper Recipe is a quick and easy weeknight meal that’s perfect for busy families. It’s a delicious and comforting dish made with ground beef, pasta, and a flavorful sauce, all cooked in one pan.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, chopped finely
  • 3 cups rotini pasta (or substitute penne or medium shells)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown Beef and Onions: Heat a pan over medium-high heat. Spray the pan with olive oil cooking spray. Brown ground beef and onion in the pan until cooked through – about 10 minutes.
  2. Add Ingredients: Add in the seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, raw uncooked pasta, broth, tomato paste, and water. Stir, cover, and bring to a boil.
  3. Simmer: Once boiling, remove the cover and reduce to a simmer, stirring occasionally for 12-14 minutes or until pasta is done and liquid is reduced by 3/4.
  4. Add Cheese: Move the pan off the heat and add in shredded cheese. Stir until combined.
  5. Serve: Taste for salt and pepper and add more as desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Pasta: Rotini, penne, or medium shells work well in this recipe. Gluten-free pasta is not recommended as it can become mushy.
  • Broth: You can use any type of broth for this recipe, or even water. Chicken broth and beef broth are good options.
  • Cheese: Feel free to use a different type of cheese, such as Colby jack or a Mexican blend.
  • Vegetables: Add other vegetables to this dish, such as diced bell peppers or mushrooms.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
