Description

This Hamburger Potato Casserole is a hearty and comforting dish that’s perfect for a family meal! Layers of tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and a creamy sauce are topped with melted cheese and baked to perfection. It’s a simple and satisfying casserole that’s great for a cold night or a potluck gathering.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 small potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 lbs ground beef, browned and drained
  • 2 (10.5 oz) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Brown ground beef and drain any excess grease. Peel and thinly slice potatoes.
  2. Make Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir until well blended.
  3. Layer Casserole: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Layer half of the potatoes, half of the ground beef, half of the soup mixture, and half of the cheese. Repeat layers.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 90 minutes. Check potatoes for tenderness and bake for an additional 15 minutes if needed.
  5. Finish and Serve: Remove foil and top with remaining cheese. Bake for 15 minutes more, or until cheese is melted and bubbly. Let the casserole sit for 8-12 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Baking times may vary depending on the type of potato, thickness of slices, and your oven.
  • For a richer flavor, you can use a combination of milk and half-and-half or heavy cream.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables to the casserole, such as diced onions or bell peppers.
