Description

Halloween Taco Dip is a festive and flavorful party appetizer combining creamy refried beans, zesty taco seasoning, and vibrant tomato salsa layered with sharp cheddar cheese. Accompanied by crispy tortilla tombstones and fresh toppings like black beans, green onions, cilantro, and cherry tomatoes, this dip adds a fun Halloween twist to your snack table.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Dip

  • 1 16-ounce can refried beans
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 8 ounces sour cream, divided
  • 2 tbsp taco seasoning
  • 1 12-ounce container tomato salsa (or 16-ounce container)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 cup assorted cherry tomatoes, halved

Tortilla Tombstones

  • 4 small soft flour tortillas
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare tortillas: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the small flour tortillas lightly with olive oil on both sides, then season with salt and pepper. Cut the tortillas into tombstone shapes using a knife or cookie cutter.
  2. Bake tortilla tombstones: Arrange the tortilla tombstones on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until they are crispy and golden brown. Remove from oven and set aside to cool.
  3. Mix the dip base: In a large bowl, combine the refried beans, softened cream cheese, half of the sour cream (4 ounces), and taco seasoning. Mix well until smooth and evenly blended.
  4. Assemble the dip layers: In a serving dish, spread the bean mixture evenly as the first layer. Next, layer the tomato salsa over the beans. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the salsa. Then, add black beans, green onions, cilantro, and halved cherry tomatoes on top.
  5. Add remaining toppings: Dollop the remaining 4 ounces of sour cream over the top and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly.
  6. Chill the dip: Refrigerate the assembled dip for at least 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld and the cheese to set slightly.
  7. Serve: Before serving, garnish the dish creatively with the crispy tortilla tombstones nestled around or partially inserted into the dip to enhance the Halloween theme. Serve with additional tortilla chips or veggies if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easier mixing.
  • Adjust taco seasoning quantity to taste, especially if using a spicy blend.
  • For a spicier version, consider adding diced jalapeños or hot sauce into the salsa layer.
  • Use small soft tortillas for easy cutting and optimal size for tombstones.
  • This dip can be prepared a few hours ahead to allow flavors to blend better.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
