Description

This Crock Pot French Onion Chicken is a comforting and easy slow-cooker meal featuring tender chicken breasts simmered in a savory creamy onion soup broth, topped with melted provolone cheese and crispy fried onions. Perfect for a hands-off dinner, it pairs wonderfully with noodles or rice for a hearty family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 10.5 oz condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 oz onion soup mix
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 6 – 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 1/2 tsp thyme leaves
  • 1 cup French’s crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare Crock Pot: Spray the inside of the Crock pot thoroughly with cooking spray to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Add Onions: Spread the sliced yellow onions evenly in the bottom of the Crock pot, creating a flavorful base layer.
  3. Place Chicken: Arrange the boneless, skinless chicken breasts on top of the sliced onions inside the Crock pot.
  4. Mix Soup Base: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of chicken soup, onion soup mix, and beef broth until smooth and combined.
  5. Pour Mixture: Pour the soup mixture evenly over the chicken breasts and onions in the Crock pot, ensuring the chicken is well covered.
  6. Cook on Low: Place the lid on the Crock pot and cook on LOW heat for 5 hours, allowing the chicken to become tender and absorb the flavors.
  7. Add Cheese: After 5 hours, remove the lid and place the provolone cheese slices on top of the cooked chicken breasts.
  8. Melt Cheese: Replace the lid and continue cooking for about 10 minutes on LOW until the cheese has fully melted and become bubbly.
  9. Add Toppings: Remove the lid again and sprinkle the thyme leaves and French’s crispy fried onions evenly over the chicken and cheese.
  10. Warm Toppings: Leave the Crock pot uncovered and continue cooking on LOW for an additional 10 minutes. This step warms the crispy onions while keeping them crunchy.
  11. Serve: Serve the French onion chicken hot over cooked noodles or rice if desired, and enjoy a rich, comforting meal.

Notes

  • Using cooking spray helps prevent the onions and chicken from sticking to the Crock pot.
  • The beef broth adds depth to the flavor, making the chicken juicy and savory.
  • For a lower sodium option, consider using low-sodium broth and soup products.
  • If you prefer a stronger onion flavor, add extra sliced onions or caramelize them before adding.
  • This dish pairs excellently with egg noodles, white rice, or mashed potatoes to soak up the delicious sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
