- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 lb. bulk sweet Italian sausage
- 1 cup yellow onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tsp. Italian seasoning
- 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
- 1 24-oz. jar marinara sauce
- 1 1/2 cups water
Pasta
- 8 lasagna noodles, uncooked and broken into roughly 2-3-inch pieces
Cheese Mixture
- 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese, divided
- 1 tsp. dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella, divided
Garnish
- 1/4 cup basil leaves, chopped
Instructions
- Cook Meat and Onion: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, Italian sausage, and chopped onion. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until the meat is no longer pink and onions are translucent. Drain excess fat from the skillet.
- Add Garlic and Seasonings: Return the skillet to the stove, add minced garlic, and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant. Stir in Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes.
- Add Sauce, Water, and Noodles: Pour in marinara sauce and water. Stir in the broken lasagna noodles, mixing everything well. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover the skillet and cook for 15 minutes until noodles are tender.
- Prepare Cheese Mixture: In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, half of the parmesan cheese, dried parsley, salt, black pepper, and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese until well blended.
- Add Cheese Mixture and Cook: Dollop the cheese mixture evenly over the noodles in the skillet. Cover the skillet again and cook for an additional 5 minutes to melt the cheese and heat through.
- Finish and Serve: Uncover the skillet and sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, and chopped basil leaves over the top. Serve immediately while hot and bubbly.
Notes
- This recipe uses only one skillet, making cleanup quick and easy.
- Breaking the lasagna noodles allows them to cook more evenly and quickly on the stovetop without boiling separately.
- You can adjust red pepper flakes to your heat preference or omit for a milder flavor.
- Use whole milk ricotta for creaminess; part-skim may alter texture slightly.
- Make sure to cover while cooking noodles to ensure tender pasta.
- Fresh basil added at the end brightens the flavor and adds freshness.
