Description

Enjoy crispy golden fried morel mushrooms with this easy-to-follow recipe. Fresh morels are soaked, breaded with a seasoned mixture of crushed saltine crackers and flour, then fried to a perfect golden brown. A delicious way to enjoy these prized wild mushrooms with a crunchy, flavorful crust.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Morel Mushrooms

  • 3/4 to 1 lb Fresh Morel Mushrooms
  • Water + table salt for soaking

Breading and Coating

  • 3 Large eggs
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 2 Sleeves Saltine Crackers
  • 1/2 cup All Purpose Flour

Frying

  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil
  • 4 tbsp Salted Butter
  • Additional Salt for sprinkling after frying

Instructions

  1. Soak Morels: Rinse the morel mushrooms, slice them in half, and soak them overnight in salted water to clean and prepare them for cooking.
  2. Dry Morels: Rinse the soaked mushrooms again and lay them out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to dry completely before breading.
  3. Prepare Egg Wash: Beat the eggs with milk and season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Add the dried mushrooms to coat them evenly in the mixture.
  4. Make Breading Mixture: Crush the saltine crackers inside a gallon ziplock bag, then mix the crushed crackers with the all-purpose flour to create the breading mixture.
  5. Bread the Mushrooms: Dip the coated mushrooms into the breading mixture in small batches until they are fully covered. Place them on a clean surface or plate and let them rest for 10 minutes to set the coating.
  6. Heat Oil and Butter: In a skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil and salted butter over medium-high heat. Monitor closely to prevent burning and maintain a stable frying temperature.
  7. Fry Mushrooms: Fry the mushrooms in batches for 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until they turn a nice golden brown color and become crispy.
  8. Drain and Season: Remove the fried mushrooms from the oil and drain them on paper towels. While still hot, sprinkle with additional salt to taste.
  9. Serve: Serve the crispy fried morel mushrooms hot and enjoy their delicious, crunchy texture.

Notes

  • If you find enough morels to freeze, bread them as directed but do not fry. Place the breaded mushrooms in a single layer in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw before frying as usual.
  • Other freezing methods might be available; a quick search online can provide alternative techniques.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in an air fryer or oven to maintain crispiness.
