Description
A creamy and cheesy potato bake featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with a savory French onion soup cream sauce and topped with melted tasty cheese, perfect as a comforting side dish or hearty meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Potatoes
- 2kg potatoes, peeled
Cream Mixture
- 600ml cream
- 1 x 40g packet of French Onion Soup Mix
Topping
- 250g tasty cheese, grated
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 170ºC (338ºF) to ensure it is ready for baking the potato layers evenly.
- Slice Potatoes: Using a mandolin slicer or a sharp knife, thinly slice the peeled potatoes. Thin slices help the potatoes cook through thoroughly and absorb the creamy flavors.
- Layer Potatoes: Arrange the sliced potatoes evenly in a baking dish, creating layers to build the base of the bake.
- Mix Cream and Soup: In a separate bowl, combine the cream with the French Onion Soup Mix. Stir well until the soup mix is fully dissolved to infuse the cream with rich onion flavor.
- Pour Cream Mixture: Pour the cream and soup mixture evenly over the layered potatoes, making sure all layers get some moisture for cooking.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with foil to trap steam, and bake in the oven for 1.5 hours or until the potatoes are tender and fully cooked through.
- Add Cheese Topping: Remove the foil carefully, sprinkle the grated tasty cheese evenly over the top of the potatoes.
- Bake Cheese: Return the baking dish to the oven uncovered and bake until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden, about 10-15 minutes.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately while warm and cheesy.
Notes
- For best results, use a mandolin slicer to achieve evenly thin potato slices which cook more uniformly.
- You can substitute tasty cheese with cheddar or a cheese blend if preferred.
- Covering the dish during the initial baking step helps retain moisture and cook the potatoes thoroughly.
- Letting the bake rest a few minutes after removal from the oven helps set the layers slightly for easier serving.
- This dish pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
