Description

A creamy and cheesy potato bake featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with a savory French onion soup cream sauce and topped with melted tasty cheese, perfect as a comforting side dish or hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2kg potatoes, peeled

Cream Mixture

  • 600ml cream
  • 1 x 40g packet of French Onion Soup Mix

Topping

  • 250g tasty cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 170ºC (338ºF) to ensure it is ready for baking the potato layers evenly.
  2. Slice Potatoes: Using a mandolin slicer or a sharp knife, thinly slice the peeled potatoes. Thin slices help the potatoes cook through thoroughly and absorb the creamy flavors.
  3. Layer Potatoes: Arrange the sliced potatoes evenly in a baking dish, creating layers to build the base of the bake.
  4. Mix Cream and Soup: In a separate bowl, combine the cream with the French Onion Soup Mix. Stir well until the soup mix is fully dissolved to infuse the cream with rich onion flavor.
  5. Pour Cream Mixture: Pour the cream and soup mixture evenly over the layered potatoes, making sure all layers get some moisture for cooking.
  6. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with foil to trap steam, and bake in the oven for 1.5 hours or until the potatoes are tender and fully cooked through.
  7. Add Cheese Topping: Remove the foil carefully, sprinkle the grated tasty cheese evenly over the top of the potatoes.
  8. Bake Cheese: Return the baking dish to the oven uncovered and bake until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden, about 10-15 minutes.
  9. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately while warm and cheesy.

Notes

  • For best results, use a mandolin slicer to achieve evenly thin potato slices which cook more uniformly.
  • You can substitute tasty cheese with cheddar or a cheese blend if preferred.
  • Covering the dish during the initial baking step helps retain moisture and cook the potatoes thoroughly.
  • Letting the bake rest a few minutes after removal from the oven helps set the layers slightly for easier serving.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
