  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground Italian sausage
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups grated low-moisture mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3/4 cup unseasoned panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 pound mostaccioli pasta

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Make Meat Sauce: Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sautรฉ onions until softened. Add sausage and cook until browned. Stir in garlic. Drain excess grease and add marinara sauce. Simmer while preparing other components.
  2. Make Cheese Mixture: In a bowl, combine egg, ricotta cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, mozzarella cheese, and ยฝ cup Parmesan cheese.
  3. Make Breadcrumb Topping: In a separate skillet, melt butter over medium heat and cook until golden brown. Remove from heat and stir in panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, and remaining ยผ cup Parmesan cheese.
  4. Cook Pasta: Cook mostaccioli according to package directions. Drain well.
  5. Assemble Casserole: In a 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the pasta mixture, then the ricotta cheese mixture, and finally the remaining pasta mixture. Sprinkle with the breadcrumb topping.
  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Uncover and bake for 5-10 minutes more, or until breadcrumbs are golden brown.
