Ingredients

Scale

Cake and Frosting

  • 1 package cake mix of your choice (regular size)
  • 1 cup prepared frosting of your choice

Coatings

  • 1 package (12 ounces) each orange, pink, blue, purple, vibrant green, black and white Wilton candy melts

Decorations

  • Candy coating disks
  • Jumbo sprinkles
  • Candy-coated sunflower kernels
  • Candy eyeballs
  • Twizzlers Rainbow Twists
  • Life Savers
  • Colored sugar
  • Assorted sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven and prepare the cake mix according to the package directions. Pour the batter into a greased 13×9-inch baking pan and bake for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack.
  2. Mix Cake and Frosting: Once the cake is fully cooled, crumble it into a large mixing bowl. Add 1 cup of prepared frosting to the crumbled cake and mix thoroughly until combined and easy to shape.
  3. Form Cake Balls: Shape the cake mixture into 1 1/2-inch balls using your hands or a scoop. Place the cake balls on baking sheets and chill them in the freezer for at least 2 hours or in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours to firm up.
  4. Melt Candy Coatings: In separate microwave-safe bowls, melt each color of Wilton candy melts by microwaving in short bursts. Stir after each burst until the melts are fully smooth and melted.
  5. Dip and Decorate: Dip each chilled cake ball into the melted candy coating, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the coated cake balls on parchment-lined baking sheets. Quickly decorate with candy eyeballs, sprinkles, colored sugar, or other decorations as desired before the coating sets.
  6. Set and Serve: Let the coated cake balls stand at room temperature until the candy coating is completely set. Once firm, they are ready to serve and enjoy.

Notes

  • Ensure cake is completely cooled before mixing with frosting to prevent it from melting.
  • Chilling the cake balls is essential to keep them firm when dipping in melted candy.
  • You can customize the decorations to match different themes or occasions.
  • If candy melts become too thick, stir in a small amount of vegetable oil or shortening to thin.
  • Store cake eyeballs in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
