Description

These Best Black Bean Burgers are loaded with flavor and a bit of a kick from chipotle peppers. A perfect meatless option for your next barbecue!

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Black Bean Patties:

  • 3 cups cooked black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/3 cup grated yellow onion*
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 chipotle peppers from a can of chipotles in adobo, diced
  • 2 tablespoons adobo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg**
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs

Additional Ingredients:

  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing
  • Cooking spray, if grilling
  • Hamburger buns, for serving
  • Desired fixings, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Black Bean Patties: In a large bowl, combine the beans, onion, garlic, chipotles, adobo sauce, tamari, balsamic, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mash with a potato masher until the mixture holds together with some visible bean chunks. Add the egg and panko; fold until combined.
  2. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 6 patties. If too wet, chill for 20 minutes.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for about 5 minutes per side. Alternatively, grill for 8 minutes on the first side and 4 minutes on the second.
  4. Serve: Serve on burger buns with desired fixings.

Notes

  • *Grate the onion on the large holes of a box grater to release excess liquid.
  • **For a vegan option, replace the egg with a flax egg. Vegan burgers may require slightly longer cooking on the grill.
  • For a gluten-free option, try the Quinoa Burger recipe instead.
